HbA1c Blood Test (Diabetes Screen)
HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. Unlike a finger-prick glucose test, it is not affected by what you ate that morning, making it the standard test for diabetes and prediabetes screening.
HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) reflects your average blood glucose over approximately the last two to three months. It is the test GPs use to diagnose type 2 diabetes and monitor long-term blood sugar control.
Because HbA1c is not affected by recent meals, stress, or time of day, a single sample gives a reliable picture of metabolic health without the need to fast beforehand.
Understanding your result (mmol/mol):
- • Below 42: Normal: no diabetes
- • 42-47: Prediabetes: increased risk; lifestyle changes recommended
- • 48 or above: Diabetes range: further assessment advised
Our GMC-registered doctors review every result and explain what it means for you. If your HbA1c is raised, we can arrange follow-up testing or referral as appropriate.
Who should book an HbA1c test?
- • Routine diabetes screening, especially if you are over 40 or have a family history
- • Symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, or unexplained weight change
- • Monitoring known prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
- • Part of a wider health check alongside cholesterol and insulin resistance testing
The Gold blood test package (£250) includes HbA1c alongside thyroid, iron, and full biochemistry if you want a broader annual screen in one visit.

Common Questions
Q.Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?
No. HbA1c measures long-term glucose control and is not affected by recent food intake. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
Q.How is HbA1c different from a glucose blood test?
A glucose test shows your blood sugar at one moment in time and is often done fasting. HbA1c reflects your average level over roughly 2-3 months, which is why it is preferred for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes.
Q.Can I combine HbA1c with other tests in one visit?
Yes. Many patients add cholesterol, thyroid, or liver function tests in the same blood draw. If you are also booking a fasting insulin resistance test, we will advise on the best combination when you book.
Q.How quickly will I receive results?
HbA1c results are typically available within one working day and emailed to you once reviewed by our clinical team.
