Full Blood Count (FBC)
Tiredness that won't shift. Getting ill more often than you should. Bruising too easily. A Full Blood Count can reveal what's happening in your blood and point toward the cause.
A Full Blood Count is one of the most commonly requested blood tests. It measures the cells that make up your blood: red cells, white cells, and platelets. Abnormalities in any of these can indicate infection, anaemia, clotting problems, or conditions that need further investigation.
What the FBC measures:
- • Red blood cells and haemoglobin (oxygen-carrying capacity)
- • White blood cells (immune function and infection response)
- • Platelets (blood clotting ability)
- • MCV, MCH, MCHC (red cell size and haemoglobin content)
Why patients book this test:
- • Investigating tiredness, weakness, or shortness of breath
- • Checking for anaemia or iron deficiency
- • Monitoring ongoing health conditions
- • Pre-operative assessment
- • General health screening
An FBC can reveal problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. Low haemoglobin suggests anaemia. Elevated white cells may indicate infection or inflammation. Abnormal platelet counts can affect how your blood clots.
