Managing Cardiovascular Risk

High cholesterol is often 'silent'-showing no symptoms until it contributes to heart disease or stroke. Regular profiling is essential for monitoring the effects of diet, exercise, or medication on your cardiovascular health.

Profile Breakdown

  • Total Cholesterol: The overall amount of cholesterol in your blood.
  • HDL (Good) Cholesterol: Helps remove 'bad' cholesterol from your arteries.
  • LDL (Bad) Cholesterol: The main source of arterial buildup and blockage.
  • Triglycerides: A type of fat found in the blood that increases risk.

FAQs

Common questions

Q.What markers are included in the lipid profile?

The profile measures Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, Triglycerides, and Total Cholesterol:HDL ratio. Together these markers give a comprehensive picture of your cardiovascular lipid risk.

Q.Do I need to fast before a cholesterol test?

For the most accurate LDL and triglyceride readings, we recommend fasting for 10-12 hours beforehand. Drink water as normal. If fasting is not possible, the test can still be performed but your triglyceride and LDL values may be slightly higher than baseline.

Q.How quickly will I get my results?

Lipid profile results are available the same day. A £50 phlebotomy fee applies in addition to the test price of £72.50.

Q.What do abnormal cholesterol results mean?

Elevated LDL or triglycerides increase your risk of heart disease and stroke, often without symptoms. NICE recommends statin therapy when 10-year cardiovascular risk exceeds 10%. Our GPs can calculate your QRISK score and advise on lifestyle changes or medication.

Q.Can I add extra tests to my cholesterol blood draw?

Yes. Many patients combine the lipid profile with HbA1c (diabetes screening), liver function, or thyroid testing in the same blood draw. Ask at reception or call us to discuss which combination suits your needs.

Q.How do I book a private cholesterol test in London?

Book online or walk in to our Harley Street clinic seven days a week. Same-day lipid results are available for most patients.
