Contraceptive Services
Expert long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) at our Harley Street clinic. Coil fitting and Nexplanon implant procedures performed by our Consultant Gynaecologist.
Long-Acting Contraception
Medical Express Clinic offers a range of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) options, including copper and hormonal IUDs (coils) and the Nexplanon contraceptive implant. All procedures are performed by Mr Hikmat Naoum, Consultant Gynaecologist, providing you with expert care and peace of mind.
Consultation and fitting are completed in a single appointment. We keep all devices in stock, including T-Safe, Mirena, Kyleena and Nexplanon, so there is no need to source your own device before your visit.
Coil Fitting (IUD/IUS)
Copper IUD (Non-Hormonal)
A hormone-free option effective for up to 10 years. It works by preventing fertilisation and is effective immediately upon insertion. It can also be used as emergency contraception if fitted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.
Stocked devices: T-Safe and T-Safe Mini
Hormonal IUS
Releases a small amount of progestogen locally. Effective for 5 to 6 years and often significantly reduces heavy or painful periods.
Stocked devices: Mirena and Kyleena
Nexplanon Implant
3-Year Protection
A small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of your upper arm. It releases progestogen to prevent ovulation and is over 99% effective.
Nexplanon is an excellent choice for those who cannot take oestrogen or who find it difficult to remember daily pills. The procedure is quick and performed under local anaesthetic.
What to Expect
Before Appointment
No specific preparation is required. You do not need to be on your period. If having a new coil fitted, avoid unprotected intercourse for 7 days beforehand.
The Procedure
Appointments take 20-30 minutes. Fitting takes only a few minutes. A nursing chaperone is always present. Local anaesthetic is used for implants.
Aftercare
You can return to normal activities immediately. Mild cramping or spotting is normal for a day or two. We recommend a coil check after 6 weeks.

Q.Do I need a separate consultation before fitting?
No. At Medical Express Clinic, the consultation and fitting are completed in the same appointment to save you time.
Q.Do I need to bring my own coil or implant?
No. We maintain a full stock of T-Safe, T-Safe Mini, Mirena, Kyleena and Nexplanon devices at our Harley Street clinic.
Q.Is the procedure painful?
Most women experience cramping similar to period pain during coil fitting, which usually subsides quickly. For Nexplanon, we use local anaesthetic so the insertion itself is painless.
Q.How soon am I protected?
Copper IUDs are effective immediately. Hormonal IUS and Nexplanon are effective immediately if fitted during the first few days of your cycle; otherwise, additional protection is needed for 7 days.
Q.Can I have my old device removed and a new one fitted at once?
Yes. We offer combined removal and fitting appointments for both coils and implants.
Q.When should I have a coil check?
We recommend a follow-up check 6 weeks after fitting to ensure the device is correctly positioned. This includes an ultrasound scan if required.
