Which coil visit do you need?
Whether you want a coil fitted for the first time, need the current device removed, or are due a replacement, you can do that here without a referral. Every procedure is carried out by Mr Hikmat Naoum, Consultant Gynaecologist, chaperoned and assisted by a member of the nursing team throughout. Coil clinics at Medical Express Clinic run on Thursdays and Fridays by appointment.

Copper coil fitting (T-Safe or T-Safe Mini) is £550. Hormonal coil fitting (Mirena or Kyleena) is £650. Each fitting price includes the consultation, the device and the procedure in one visit of about 20 to 30 minutes.
Coil removal is £400, including consultant review. Combined removal and fitting in one appointment is from £700: £700 if the new device is copper, £800 if it is hormonal.

Copper coil or hormonal coil
Choose by hormones, period effects and device size. Mr Naoum can explain how long the suitable device is licensed to remain in place at the appointment.
Facts about the two types
A coil is a small T-shaped device placed in the uterus. The copper coil (IUD) contains no hormones. Copper ions make it harder for sperm to reach an egg. The hormonal coil (IUS) releases progestogen locally in the uterus, which thins the lining and thickens cervical mucus.
Copper fitting is £550. Hormonal fitting, Mirena or Kyleena, is £650.

If you want to avoid hormones and your periods are manageable, copper is the usual choice. If heavy or painful periods are part of the reason you are here, Mr Naoum can discuss whether a hormonal coil would suit you. Kyleena uses a lower local hormone dose and is slightly smaller than Mirena, which some people who have not had children find more comfortable.
If you are considering perimenopause care, the appointment is also the place to ask whether a hormonal coil could sit alongside oestrogen as part of HRT. Mr Naoum will recommend a device from your history, your periods and what you want the coil to do.

All fittings and removals are done by Mr Naoum personally, with a nursing chaperone throughout.

What happens at the appointment
Facts about the appointment
Fitting takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the consultation. Removal is often under a minute once the threads are accessible. Clinics are Thursday and Friday only.
A six-week coil check is optional and costs £250, including ultrasound if needed. It is arranged through the clinic after fitting.

Before
No special preparation is required, and the visit does not have to fall during a period. Mr Naoum will explain any contraception precautions that apply. Ibuprofen or paracetamol an hour before can help if cramping is a concern.

During
After a short consultation there is a speculum examination and the fitting. Instillagel is applied to the cervix. Mr Naoum explains each step, and you may ask him to pause. A chaperone is present.

After
You can return to usual activity the same day. Mild cramping or light spotting for a day or two is common, and paracetamol or ibuprofen is usually enough. Mr Naoum gives after-care instructions before you leave. If you have concerns after fitting or removal, call 0207 499 1991.
Removal and combined replacement
Removal is the visit when the coil comes out and nothing is put back. The combined visit is for taking the old device out and fitting a new one on the same day.

The device itself is the same. The difference is who fits it, whether consultation and fitting happen together, and how you book.

The NHS remains a reasonable option if you can get a timely appointment through your GP or a sexual health clinic. People come here when they want a consultant to do the procedure, when they want consultation and fitting on the same day, or when they need a device that is already in stock.
Nexplanon implant
Nexplanon is a small flexible rod placed under the skin of the upper arm. It is a consultation-led service, not one of the four coil appointments listed above.

When a coil visit is not the first step
Pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, fertility or early-pregnancy concerns need consultant assessment before coil fitting. Those visits start with consultant gynaecology.

Q.Is the copper coil or the hormonal coil better?
Neither is better for everyone. Copper is hormone-free and may make periods heavier. Hormonal coils often make periods lighter. Kyleena is a lower-dose, slightly smaller hormonal coil. Prices are £550 and £650. Mr Naoum helps you choose in the visit and can explain how long the suitable device is licensed to remain in place.
Q.Can I have a coil fitted if I have never been pregnant?
Mr Naoum fits coils regardless of whether you have had children. Kyleena is slightly smaller than Mirena, which some people find more comfortable.
Q.How painful is coil fitting?
Most people describe a strong period cramp lasting a short time during insertion. Instillagel is applied to the cervix beforehand at no extra charge. Ibuprofen an hour before can also help.
Q.Can the coil be used as emergency contraception?
