Choosing between a copper coil (IUD) and a hormonal coil (IUS) usually comes down to three practical questions: whether you want a completely hormone-free method, how you want your periods to behave, and which frame size suits your anatomy. At your appointment, Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Hikmat Naoum will discuss your cycle and explain how long your chosen device is licensed to remain in place.
Facts about the two types
Both devices are small, T-shaped frames placed gently inside the uterus. The copper coil (IUD) contains no hormones at all; instead, copper ions create an environment where sperm cannot survive or reach an egg. The hormonal coil (IUS) releases a steady, localised dose of progestogen directly into the womb, thinning the uterine lining and thickening cervical mucus with minimal systemic hormone absorption.
All-in copper coil fitting is £550. All-in hormonal coil fitting (Mirena or Kyleena) is £650, with consultation, device and procedure included in a single visit.

If you want to avoid synthetic hormones entirely and your natural periods are already comfortable, the copper coil (available in standard T-Safe and the smaller T-Safe Mini frame) is the straightforward choice. If you want lighter, less painful periods alongside reliable contraception, a hormonal coil is often transformative: Mirena delivers a higher local progestogen dose that frequently stops bleeding altogether, while Kyleena uses a narrower insertion tube, a smaller frame and a lower hormone dose that many women who have not had children prefer.

Your entire coil fitting appointment takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including your consultation and the insertion itself. A straightforward coil removal usually takes less than a minute once the threads are visualised. Clinics run on Thursdays and Fridays.
If you would like the reassurance of a follow-up position check six weeks after fitting, an optional coil check appointment is £250 (including ultrasound if needed).

Before
You do not need to be on your period to have a coil fitted, and Dr Naoum will check timing and any contraception precautions with you first. Taking standard ibuprofen or paracetamol about an hour before your appointment helps settle any post-fitting cramps.

During
After reviewing your history and device choice, Dr Naoum performs a gentle speculum examination, applies Instillagel local anaesthetic gel to the cervix, and places the coil. He talks you through every step and works entirely at your pace with a nursing chaperone present.

After
Most women head straight back to work or normal daily plans. Period-like cramping or light spotting for 24 to 48 hours is normal and responds well to simple pain relief. You leave with clear aftercare notes and can call our team on 0207 499 1991 at any time if you have a question.
Removal and combined replacement
Whether you are ready to conceive, switching contraception, or due to exchange an expiring coil for a fresh device, both standalone removal and single-visit exchange can be booked directly online.

Do I need a separate consultation before fitting?
For all four online coil bookings, no separate appointment is needed: your consultation with Dr Naoum and the fitting, removal or replacement happen in the same 20 to 30 minute appointment.
Do I need to bring my own coil?
We keep T-Safe, T-Safe Mini, Mirena and Kyleena in stock at 117a Harley Street, and the cost of the device is included in your fitting fee.
Is the copper coil or the hormonal coil better?
The right choice depends on your body and goals: the copper coil (£550) is 100% hormone-free but can make periods heavier initially, while hormonal coils (£650) reduce menstrual bleeding and cramps (Mirena often stops periods altogether, and Kyleena offers a smaller frame and lower hormone dose). Can I have a coil fitted if I have never been pregnant?

Can the coil be used as emergency contraception?
