Private HRT clinic in London

An HRT consultation at Medical Express Clinic is a GP visit with Dr Penny Sheehan for women who want HRT started, transferred from another clinic or monitored.

At an HRT consultation, Dr Sheehan reviews your history, current medicines and any suitable recent blood results before deciding whether new tests or a prescription are appropriate.

When HRT is clinically appropriate, the discussion may include body-identical (micronised) oestrogen and progesterone, conventional HRT as patches, gel or tablets, and testosterone for women where it is clinically indicated.

The HRT consultation costs £150, and a later review of the same issue costs £100 when that is clinically suitable.

Blood tests arranged for HRT decisions are charged separately unless they are already included in a booked package such as the £1,599 comprehensive menopause screen, pharmacy medicine charges are paid separately, and a prescription is not guaranteed at the first visit.

If you mainly want symptoms sorted, or you want DEXA, mammogram, spirometry and Seca body composition through the £1,599 comprehensive menopause screen, book a menopause assessment first.

HRT consultations take place at 117a Harley Street, London, and can be booked online without a referral or by calling 0207 499 1991.

From first visit to later reviews

Your first HRT review

The first appointment is a clinical review. Dr Sheehan takes the history, including any previous HRT, current medicines and the symptoms you want help with. Treatment, if it is offered, is individualised, and later visits exist so the dose can be checked, results discussed and the prescription adjusted when that is still appropriate.

How prescribing works

  1. Consultation. Dr Sheehan takes the history, including any previous HRT, current medicines and the symptoms you want help with.
  2. Clinical information. She reviews any suitable recent blood results you already have. If new tests are needed before a prescription can be considered, they can be arranged at Medical Express Clinic and are charged separately.
  3. The decision. If HRT is appropriate, she discusses the preparation and how it would be used. If it is not, she will talk through other options with you.
  4. Later reviews. Follow-up consultations and repeat bloods are arranged when they are clinically indicated. There is no single published interval that fits every woman. When a later visit for the same issue is suitable, that follow-up is £100.

If you want DEXA, mammogram, spirometry or bundled screening bloods as part of a wider midlife baseline, book the comprehensive menopause health screen through the menopause clinic.

Preparations

Types of HRT that may be discussed

What is discussed depends on your symptoms, medical history, risk factors and preference, and only after the clinical review.

Preparations we discuss

When HRT is clinically appropriate, the conversation may include:

  • body-identical (micronised) oestrogen and progesterone
  • conventional HRT as patches, gel or tablets
  • testosterone for women, where it is clinically indicated

Some women leave with a different plan, or with no hormone treatment at all. Medicine dispensed by a pharmacy is paid separately from the consultation.

Transfer of care

If you already have HRT from another clinic

Bring the current prescription and any recent blood results that are still useful, so Dr Sheehan can review them with your history rather than starting from a blank page. After that review she decides whether to continue, adjust or stop the prescription.

Transferring HRT

  • Book the £150 HRT consultation. No referral is required.
  • Bring your current prescription and any recent suitable blood results.
  • Dr Sheehan reviews those alongside your history and current medicines.
  • New tests, if needed, are arranged at Medical Express Clinic and charged separately.
  • After that review, treatment may continue, change, or stop if it is no longer appropriate.

If your main question is whether midlife symptoms fit perimenopause or menopause, book a menopause assessment first.

Blood tests

Blood tests used for HRT decisions

Blood tests are chosen by the doctor for the decision in front of her. They are not a fixed package on every visit, and they are not included in the £150 consultation fee unless they already sit inside a booked package such as the £1,599 screen.

Blood monitoring

When they are clinically indicated, tests may include:

  • hormone levels: oestradiol, FSH, progesterone, testosterone
  • liver function
  • lipid profile
  • thyroid function
  • full blood count

These results help the doctor decide whether a prescription, a change of dose or a different plan is appropriate. A blood result is not a diagnosis on its own.

Standalone hormone profiles can be booked through the female hormone menopause blood test if you only need the bloods.

Later visits

Follow-up and continuity

HRT, once started, still needs review. How soon that happens depends on how you are and what the doctor needs to check, not on a published timetable. Dr Penny Sheehan and Dr Hikmat Naoum are the clinicians assigned to this clinic, and continuity with the same GP is the usual intention where appointment availability allows.

The £100 follow-up

A follow-up consultation for the same issue is £100 when it is clinically suitable. That visit is used for dose review, results discussion or prescription adjustment.

If the problem has changed, a new £150 consultation may be the right booking. Repeat bloods at later visits remain separately charged unless they are already included in a package you have booked.

When to book something else

When menopause or gynaecology assessment is more suitable

This clinic is for GP HRT prescribing, transfer and monitoring. Symptom assessment, imaging packages and consultant gynaecology sit on different routes.

Other useful routes

If you want symptom assessment, or the £1,599 comprehensive menopause health screen with DEXA, mammogram, spirometry, Seca body composition and bundled bloods, book a menopause assessment.

Heavy, irregular or postmenopausal bleeding, pelvic pain, or a problem that needs consultant gynaecology should go to our sister clinic's specialist menopause service.

New, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms need a same-day GP or emergency assessment rather than a planned HRT review.

If HRT is not appropriate after review, Dr Sheehan can discuss non-hormonal options and next steps with you.

FAQs

HRT clinic FAQs

How much is a private HRT consultation in London?

An HRT consultation with Dr Penny Sheehan at Medical Express Clinic is £150. A later review of the same issue is £100 when that is clinically suitable.

Can I transfer HRT from another clinic?

After a clinical review, the clinic can continue or adjust treatment. Bring your current prescription and any recent suitable blood results. A previous prescription does not guarantee that the same regimen will be repeated.

Can I get HRT at my first appointment?

Dr Sheehan reviews your symptoms, history, current medicines and any suitable recent blood results first. A doctor can prescribe HRT when it is clinically appropriate; a prescription is not guaranteed at the first visit. If new tests are needed, they can be arranged at the clinic and are charged separately.

What blood tests are needed before HRT?

That depends on the review: recent results may be enough, and if new tests are needed the doctor chooses the panel. Those tests are charged separately unless they are already included in a booked package such as the £1,599 comprehensive menopause screen.

How much is HRT follow-up?

£100 for a follow-up consultation on the same issue when that is clinically suitable. Repeat bloods remain separately charged.

What types of HRT do you prescribe?

When treatment is appropriate, the discussion may include body-identical (micronised) oestrogen and progesterone, conventional HRT as patches, gel or tablets, and testosterone for women where it is clinically indicated. Treatment is individualised.

Is HRT safe for me?

Suitability depends on your personal history and risk factors. Dr Sheehan reviews these with you before any prescription.

When should I book the menopause clinic instead?

Book a menopause assessment if you want symptom assessment, or if you want the £1,599 comprehensive screen. Book this consultation when the question is already the prescription, a transfer or later monitoring.

Do I need a GP referral?

You can book directly.

Will I have a bone scan or mammogram at the HRT visit?

DEXA, mammogram, spirometry, Seca body composition and bundled screening bloods belong to the comprehensive menopause health screen, not to a standard HRT consultation.
