Who may be considered
It is for adults aged 18 to 75 who want medically supervised weight management and are prepared to attend in person. Doctors may consider Mounjaro where body mass index is 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Meeting a BMI figure does not mean treatment will be offered. Your doctor also reviews your history, examination, blood results, current medicines and whether you can attend the planned reviews.

What happens at your appointment
The first visit is a conversation and an examination, so the doctor can decide whether a prescription is appropriate. Bring a list of medicines and any recent results you already have.

Baseline blood tests
The included panel looks at blood count, kidney and liver function, cholesterol and related fats, and HbA1c. Those results help the doctor decide whether treatment can be considered safely.
Body composition
A full body composition scan records a starting point for fat, including visceral fat, and muscle mass. Later reviews can then look at how your body has changed, not only the number on the scales.
How the medicine decision and reviews work
If a GLP-1 weight-loss treatment is offered, you still have the same doctor at the later reviews. That is where dose, side effects, food and activity are looked at together, and where treatment can be adjusted or stopped.
Mounjaro and the review schedule
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a GLP-1 weight-loss injection, given once a week under the skin when prescribed. It is a prescription-only medicine, issued only after the assessment and only if it remains clinically appropriate.
If treatment starts, the usual licensed approach is to begin at a low weekly dose and increase it gradually if you tolerate it. Your doctor sets that schedule, so you should not treat any published dose table as a personal plan.
The same doctor reviews you at weeks 4, 8, 12 and 16. Those visits include diet and lifestyle support, a check on side effects, and a decision on whether to adjust the dose, continue or stop. You also have direct access to your doctor between appointments.

Side effects, safety and when this is not the right fit
Common stomach effects can occur, and one reason people want a doctor nearby is so they do not have to work out alone whether those effects are manageable. Tell your doctor if they persist or make it hard to eat and drink, so the dose or treatment can be changed if needed.
Side effects and safety
Common effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal pain. People with diabetes who also take insulin or a sulfonylurea can develop low blood sugar. These effects are not trivial. Tell your doctor if they persist or make it hard to eat and drink.
Seek urgent medical help for severe, persistent abdominal pain. If you inject more than prescribed, contact your doctor or go to hospital.
We do not start Mounjaro in type 1 diabetes, because that sits outside the weight-management licence, and we do not prescribe it in pregnancy.
If you are breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy, your doctor must discuss whether treatment is suitable and what the alternatives are.
The programme is for adults aged 18 to 75. Treatment is not started if you have a known allergy to the ingredients.
Always tell your doctor about pancreatic disease, a severe gut problem such as gastroparesis, heart, kidney, liver, gallbladder or thyroid conditions. Your doctor reviews those individually and may still decide against treatment after seeing you.
New, severe or rapidly worsening illness needs a same-day GP or emergency assessment, not this programme. This service does not replace urgent care.
If the doctor decides not to start the full weight-management programme, you will only be charged for clinical services already provided.
Results, reviews and ongoing care
Your doctor reviews you at the planned visits, supports you with side effects, and can stop treatment if the medicine is not right for you. Nobody can honestly tell you how much weight you will lose.
Results and ongoing care
Trial averages for tirzepatide are population figures. They do not tell your doctor how much weight you will lose, or whether you will lose weight at all. Some people notice appetite change in the first few weeks. Many do not. Response depends on starting weight, tolerability, other conditions and what you can sustain with food and activity.
Your doctor reviews progress at the four included appointments and can stop treatment if it is not tolerated or no longer appropriate. How long anyone stays on an injection is an individual clinical decision, not a package length.
