Gamma GT Blood Test

GGT is one of the liver's early warning signals. This enzyme rises when your liver is under stress, often before you notice any symptoms. Testing gives you information you can act on.

Gamma GT (GGT) is a liver enzyme that rises when the liver is under stress. It's particularly sensitive to alcohol-related liver changes. Levels can increase after just a few weeks of heavy drinking, making it a useful marker for monitoring alcohol consumption and its effects.

GGT is often used alongside other liver markers to investigate abnormal results or assess liver health over time.

Reasons to test Gamma GT:

  • Abnormal liver function results requiring investigation
  • Monitoring alcohol-related liver concerns
  • Assessing medication effects on the liver
  • Investigating fatigue, nausea, or abdominal discomfort

Elevated GGT can also occur with bile duct problems, fatty liver disease, and certain medications. Your results are interpreted by a GP who can explain what a raised level means for you specifically.

FAQs

Common questions

Q.Should I get the full liver panel instead?

If you want a complete picture, the Liver Function Test (£72.50) includes GGT plus ALT, AST, bilirubin, and other markers. For monitoring a known issue, GGT alone may be sufficient.

Q.How quickly will alcohol affect my GGT?

GGT can rise within 2-3 weeks of increased drinking and typically takes 2-4 weeks to normalise after stopping.
