FAQs about Pre-employment Medical Examination

Why do I need to go for a pre-employment medical evaluation?

Responsible employers recognise the importance of pre-employment medical evaluations. This means they are aware of the risks that other employees might carry and deal with them properly to avoid any kind of injury to the fellow mates at the work place.
According to statutory bindings, it is essential in certain industries and workplaces to ensure their employees meet the national criteria required for the industry in which they are employed/seeking employment.

What should I do if I had illness or injury in the past?

Our medical practitioner will asses the injury caused and find out if there are further risks to be managed at the work place, if there are these will be mentioned and the risks will be mitigated, if there is ongoing treatment required, we are happy to facilitate this.

It is important that you answer all the questions to the practitioner honestly about your past medical history. Make sure you are not in a position that may cause harm or injury to yourself or your colleagues that your employer or examining physician doesn’t know about.

Should I carry any document at the appointment?

Yes, you need to bring a photo ID like your driving license to your appointment. You will not be able to conduct medical check-up without it. If you wear prescription glasses, hearing aids or lenses, don’t forget to bring them with you.

What can I wear at the appointment?

There is no specific dress code for the examination but you will most likely have to remove your clothing at certain stages as part of the thorough medical check-up. It is advised that you wear proper underwear for performing the urine test.
If you are attending a work fitness assessment, consider wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothes and running shoes.

What else to consider for my medical test?

  • The time needed will vary from one to two hour depending on the extent of the examination.
  • You will have to change into a gown provided by the clinic.
  • The result of hearing test or audiometry will not have any side effects. However, avoid exposure to loud noises for the few hours prior to the medical examination, as this may affect the results of the testing.
  • Spirometry or the test for lung function may be required and you may have to use a Ventolin inhaler during the assessment. It is advisable that you do not smoke before the medical test.

What will happen during the medical examination?

The medical evaluation will depend on the demands of the organisation and job profile as to what tests you will need to undergo. In all cases, you will have to fill out a questionnaire and have a physical examination to ensure that you are absolutely fit.

Our health professional will examine your neck, abdomen, chest, spine and all the joints carefully.

Personal examinations are not typically part of pre-employment medical checks, so your employer will not request these.

Why do I need to go for alcohol and drug tests?

You may be asked to perform urine drug screening for alcohol or banned drugs. These may include – opiates, amphetamines, cannabinoids, benzodiazepines, methamphetamines, sleeping tablets. Cannabis might stay within the body for several days, if it is used regularly for weeks and it could also be detected if used occasionally.

If you are currently taking medication, you must state it on the health evaluation questionnaire since it will get detected later by the health experts, and if not disclosed it could invalidate the entire medical.

The collection of urine will be checked by our health professional to know that the sample is yours at the time of drug screening. This is done in a sensitive way ensuring complete privacy of the candidate undergoing the test.

Try to drink at least 2 to 3 cups of water before going for urine test. If your urine is overly diluted, its creatinine level will be assessed. If the creatinine level is extremely low, a new sample will be required to ensure accuracy. If the level of creatinine is extremely low, the sample will have to be recollected to ensure accuracy.

Can I obtain a copy of my medical tests?

We have a strict privacy policy for medical tests and examinations that is always followed regarding collecting and disseminating any personal details. Please make sure to let us know exactly how you wish to receive your results, whether you are conducting screening for your employees or for yourself.
