Menopause assessment · £150

What can a GP menopause consultation help you decide?

If your periods have changed, sleep has broken, or you are not sure whether this is perimenopause, a GP can take a proper history and help you decide what, if anything, needs to happen next. You can book without a diagnosis or a referral.

Some women want a focused conversation about symptoms. Others want a fuller midlife baseline, including bone density, breast imaging and bundled blood tests. Those are two different visits. HRT may be discussed when it is appropriate for you.

Facts about menopause assessment

A menopause consultation at Medical Express Clinic is a GP visit with Dr Penelope Sheehan at 117a Harley Street. She reviews your symptoms and medical history, then helps you decide whether this is likely to be perimenopause or menopause, whether any tests would change the plan, and whether treatment, including HRT, is worth discussing.

The GP consultation is £150. It lasts 30 minutes and is available on Mondays and Wednesdays. You can book it without a referral.

The comprehensive menopause health screen is £1,599. It includes a 60-minute GP consultation plus DEXA, digital mammogram, spirometry, Seca 525 body composition analysis, bundled hormone, thyroid, metabolic and nutritional blood tests, and follow-up consultations at 3 months and 6 months included in the package price.

HRT is one option that may be discussed. Dr Sheehan reviews your history and any suitable recent blood results first, then decides whether new testing is needed before she would prescribe.

Book the £150 consultation if you want symptom assessment and a practical plan. Book the £1,599 screen if you also want that midlife baseline in one package.

Two visits

Which visit should you book?

A focused GP consultation is enough when you want the history and a plan. The screen is for women who also want the bundled midlife investigations.

The £150 consultation is the right first step when you want Dr Sheehan to listen to the history, sort out whether the pattern fits perimenopause or menopause, and talk through treatment when it fits. Blood tests arranged at that visit sit outside the consultation fee.

The £1,599 screen is the right first step when you want that same GP assessment plus the bundled midlife investigations listed in the comprehensive screen section below. The later 3-month and 6-month reviews are part of that package.

If you already know you want HRT reviewed, transferred from another clinic or monitored after a prescription, book the HRT clinic.

Symptoms

Symptoms this clinic commonly assesses

Menopause and perimenopause do not look the same in every woman. Dr Sheehan starts with what has changed for you, rather than with a test list, and the consultation is still useful if your symptoms are mixed, mild, or hard to name.

Symptoms we assess

Women book this clinic with one or more of the following:

  • hot flushes and night sweats
  • sleep disruption
  • mood changes and anxiety
  • brain fog and poor concentration
  • joint and muscle pain
  • low libido
  • vaginal dryness
  • weight changes
  • heart palpitations
  • urinary symptoms

These symptoms can have other causes. Assessment is a clinical judgement after the history, not a label from a single blood result. If you only want a standalone hormone blood profile, see the female hormone menopause blood test.

The £1,599 screen

What the comprehensive menopause health screen includes

This package is for women who want a midlife baseline as well as a GP menopause assessment. The investigations below sit inside this package only.

What is included for £1,599

GP time

  • 60-minute GP consultation with Dr Sheehan
  • Follow-up consultations at 3 months and 6 months, included in the package price

Imaging and physiology

  • DEXA bone density scan
  • Digital mammogram
  • Spirometry lung function test
  • Body composition analysis on the Seca 525, which measures fat mass, muscle mass and body water as a baseline

Blood tests included in the package

  • Hormone panel: LH, FSH, prolactin, testosterone, oestradiol, SHBG and FAI
  • Full thyroid panel: TSH, FT3, FT4 and thyroid antibodies
  • Metabolic and nutritional bloods: liver function, lipid profile, HbA1c, vitamin D, B12, folate, ferritin and full blood count

These results inform the conversation with your GP. They do not, on their own, diagnose menopause or decide that HRT will be prescribed.

After the assessment

How assessment leads to a treatment discussion

Dr Sheehan reviews your symptoms, medical history and any suitable recent blood results. If new testing would change the decision, it can be arranged at Medical Express Clinic. Outside the £1,599 package, those blood tests are charged separately.

If HRT looks appropriate, she will discuss it with you, including preparations, transfer from another clinic and later monitoring. If it is not, non-hormonal options and lifestyle strategies may be discussed instead.

How prescribing is decided

Dr Sheehan decides whether prescribing is appropriate after reviewing your history, current medicines and any suitable recent blood results. A prescription is not guaranteed at the first visit.

Pharmacy medicine charges remain separate if a prescription is later issued.

Your visit

What happens at your appointment

Bring what you already have, even if it feels incomplete. A medicine list and any recent blood results help the time go on the decision rather than reconstructing the history.

Appointment details

Consultations with Dr Sheehan run on Mondays and Wednesdays at 117a Harley Street, London W1G 6AT. You can book without a GP referral.

The GP menopause consultation is 30 minutes. The comprehensive screen includes a 60-minute GP consultation as well as DEXA bone density scan, digital mammogram, spirometry, Seca 525 body composition analysis and the bundled blood tests listed in the comprehensive screen section.

01

Before you come

Book the visit that matches what you want: the £150 consultation or the £1,599 screen. Bring names of current medicines, allergies and any recent results you already have. If you take HRT from another clinic and the main question is the prescription itself, book an HRT consultation.

02

At the clinic

Dr Sheehan takes the history and reviews what has changed. She decides whether recent results are enough or whether new tests would help. HRT is discussed when it is appropriate after that review.

03

Afterwards

You leave with a plan for this visit, which may be watchful waiting, further tests, a non-hormonal approach, or a discussion of HRT. If you booked the comprehensive screen, the 3-month and 6-month reviews are already included. If you booked the £150 consultation and a later review of the same issue is suitable, book a GP follow-up (£100).

When to book something else

When this clinic is not the first step

This clinic is for GP menopause assessment and the comprehensive screen. A few situations sit elsewhere.

Other useful routes

Heavy, irregular or postmenopausal bleeding, pelvic pain, or a problem that needs consultant gynaecology should go to our sister clinic's specialist menopause service.

If you only need hormone bloods without a menopause consultation, use the female hormone menopause blood test.

New, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms need a same-day GP or emergency assessment rather than a planned menopause visit.

FAQs

Common questions

Q.How much is a private menopause consultation in London?

A GP menopause consultation with Dr Penelope Sheehan at Medical Express Clinic is £150. The comprehensive menopause health screen is £1,599.

Q.What is included in the £1,599 menopause health screen?

A 60-minute GP consultation, DEXA bone density scan, digital mammogram, spirometry, Seca 525 body composition analysis, a full hormone panel (LH, FSH, prolactin, testosterone, oestradiol, SHBG, FAI), a full thyroid panel, metabolic and nutritional bloods, and follow-up consultations at 3 months and 6 months.

Q.Can I get HRT at my first appointment?

Dr Sheehan reviews your history and any suitable recent blood results, then decides whether new testing is needed before she would prescribe. HRT is discussed when it is appropriate. A prescription is not guaranteed at the first visit.

Q.What symptoms suggest perimenopause or menopause?

Common reasons to book include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, brain fog, joint pain, vaginal dryness, urinary symptoms and changes in libido or weight. These can have other causes, so the history comes first.

Q.Do I need blood tests before HRT?

Dr Sheehan decides whether recent results are enough or whether new tests would change the decision. Tests arranged outside the £1,599 screen are charged separately.

Q.When should I choose the comprehensive screen instead of a GP visit?

Choose the £1,599 screen when you want a midlife baseline as well as the GP assessment: bone density, mammogram, lung function, body composition and the bundled blood panels. Choose the £150 consultation when you want assessment and a plan first.

Q.Can I see Dr Penelope Sheehan without a referral?

You can book directly. Her menopause consultations run on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Q.When should I see a gynaecologist instead?

For complex gynaecological symptoms, abnormal bleeding or pelvic concerns, book consultant gynaecology rather than this GP clinic.

Q.Is HRT suitable for everyone?

If it is not appropriate, non-hormonal options and lifestyle strategies may be discussed instead.

Q.What is the Seca 525?

A medical-grade body composition analyser used in the £1,599 screen. It measures fat mass, muscle mass and body water as a baseline. It is not part of the £150 GP consultation.
