Most people will get HPV at some point. What matters is what you do about it.

HPV (human papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Most sexually active adults will contract at least one strain during their lifetime. In the majority of cases, the immune system clears it without any symptoms or lasting effects.

But not always. Certain high-risk strains (particularly HPV 16 and 18) can lead to cervical, anal, throat, and penile cancers. Other strains (HPV 6 and 11) cause genital warts. The problem is that HPV rarely announces itself. You can carry it for years without knowing.

That's why testing, vaccination, and prompt treatment of visible warts all matter. And none of them need to be complicated or embarrassing.

What is HPV?

HPV (human papillomavirus) is a group of over 200 related viruses, of which around 40 affect the genital area. High-risk strains can cause cervical, anal, penile, and throat cancers, while low-risk strains can cause genital warts. HPV is spread through skin-to-skin sexual contact and is so common that most sexually active people will be exposed at some point, often without ever knowing.

There is no cure for the virus itself, but there is highly effective vaccination to prevent infection, reliable testing to detect high-risk strains, and clinical treatment to remove visible warts.

HPV Swab Testing

If you're worried about your HPV status, or you've had a partner diagnosed with HPV, a swab test gives you a clear answer within 2–3 working days.

Our GPs test for 28 individually typed HPV DNA subtypes, covering both high-risk (cancer-associated) and low-risk (wart-associated) strains. For high-risk types 16, 18, 31, 33, and 45, the test includes reflexed mRNA analysis, which indicates whether the virus is actively producing proteins linked to cell changes. This is one of the most comprehensive HPV panels available in a private clinic setting.

The swab site depends on your clinical presentation and history: cervical or vaginal swab for women, and for men, a swab from any symptomatic area or lesion as clinically indicated by your doctor.

This is a straightforward, quick test. Your doctor will explain the process beforehand, and the consultation is entirely confidential. Results are not shared with your NHS GP unless you specifically request it.

What your results mean

Negative Result

No HPV was detected across any of the 28 subtypes tested. This is reassuring, but it doesn't guarantee lifelong immunity. Re-infection is possible through new sexual contact. Vaccination remains worthwhile even after a negative test.

Positive Result

A positive result tells you exactly which strains you carry. If a high-risk strain is detected, your doctor will explain what that means for you specifically. For types 16, 18, 31, 33, and 45, the reflexed mRNA analysis shows whether the virus is actively producing concerning proteins, which helps determine whether monitoring or further investigation is appropriate. A positive result does not mean you have cancer. It means you have information, and information is how you stay ahead of it.

Gardasil 9 Vaccination

Gardasil 9 protects against nine HPV strains: types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. Between them, these strains are responsible for approximately 90% of cervical cancers, 90% of genital warts, and the majority of HPV-related anal, throat, and penile cancers.

Who should consider it

The vaccine is most effective when given before first sexual contact, which is why the NHS programme vaccinates school-age children. But if you missed the school programme, or you're an adult who was never vaccinated, it's still worth having. The vaccine protects against strains you haven't yet been exposed to, and most people haven't encountered all nine.

Men are particularly underserved here. The NHS only began offering HPV vaccination to boys in 2019, meaning most men over 20 have never been vaccinated. Given that HPV-related throat and anal cancers are rising in men, vaccination is a straightforward preventive measure.

The schedule

Three doses over six months. The first dose is £325; the second and third are £225 each. Total cost for the full course: £775. Available for males and females from age 9 upwards. No upper age limit.

You can start your course at any appointment, seven days a week. We'll schedule your second dose (2 months later) and third dose (6 months after the first) at booking.

Genital Wart Removal by Hyfrecation

Genital warts are caused by low-risk HPV strains (usually types 6 and 11). They're not dangerous, but they can be persistent, uncomfortable, and distressing. Over-the-counter treatments are slow and often ineffective. Clinical removal deals with them directly.

What is hyfrecation?

Hyfrecation is a precise electrosurgical technique that uses a fine probe to cauterise and destroy wart tissue. It's more effective than cryotherapy (freezing) or topical treatments for most patients, particularly for larger or multiple warts.

Your procedure with Mr Naoum

All wart removal at Medical Express Clinic is performed by Mr Hikmat Naoum, Consultant Gynaecologist (GMC: 3047637). This is consultant-led treatment, not a GP procedure.

1

Assessment

Mr Naoum examines the area to confirm the diagnosis and discuss the extent of treatment. Not all lumps and bumps are warts; an accurate diagnosis matters before treatment begins.

2

Treatment

Local anaesthetic is applied so you won't feel the procedure. The hyfrecator is used to precisely remove each lesion. A chaperone is present throughout. Most sessions take 20–40 minutes depending on the number and size of warts.

3

Aftercare

Keep the treated area dry for 24 hours. Healing typically takes 7–10 days. We provide detailed wound care instructions. A follow-up appointment is available if needed.

Available Fridays only. Initial treatment is £400. Follow-up sessions (if additional treatment is required) are £150.

Common Questions

Q.How much does private HPV testing cost in the UK?

An HPV swab test at Medical Express Clinic is £190. This tests for 28 individually typed HPV subtypes (both high-risk and low-risk), with reflexed mRNA analysis for the five highest-risk strains. Results are returned in 2-3 working days. Available for men and women, seven days a week, no referral needed.

Q.I missed the NHS HPV vaccine. Is it too late?

No. The vaccine protects against strains you haven't yet been exposed to, and most people haven't encountered all nine strains covered by Gardasil 9. There's no upper age limit. The full course is three doses over six months, costing £775 in total.

Q.Do men need HPV vaccination?

Yes. HPV causes cancers in men too, particularly throat and anal cancers, both of which are increasing. The NHS only started vaccinating boys in 2019, so most men over 20 are unvaccinated. Vaccination is a straightforward preventive step.

Q.Can HPV be cured?

There's no treatment that eliminates the virus itself. In most cases, the immune system clears HPV naturally within 1-2 years. What can be treated are the consequences: genital warts can be removed, and pre-cancerous cell changes detected through screening can be monitored or treated before they progress.

Q.How effective is wart removal by hyfrecation?

Hyfrecation is one of the most effective methods for removing genital warts, particularly larger or multiple lesions. Most patients see significant clearance in a single session. However, HPV can remain dormant in surrounding skin, so recurrence is possible and follow-up treatment may be needed in some cases.

Q.Is wart removal painful?

Local anaesthetic is applied before the procedure, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Afterwards, the area may feel tender or slightly sore for a few days. Healing takes 7-10 days.

Q.Will this appear on my NHS record?

No. Private consultations and treatment at Medical Express Clinic are separate from your NHS record unless you specifically ask us to share information with your GP.

Q.Can I get tested and vaccinated on the same day?

Yes. If you'd like both an HPV swab test and your first vaccine dose, these can be done in the same appointment. Discuss this when you book.

Q.I've already had HPV. Should I still get vaccinated?

In most cases, yes. A previous HPV infection typically provides immunity to that specific strain only. Gardasil 9 covers nine strains, so it likely protects against several you haven't encountered. Your doctor can advise based on your history.
