Which allergy test or treatment do you need?

This consultant allergy clinic can investigate symptoms and provide ongoing treatment when appropriate. A £250 consultation with Dr Pereira is the usual starting point when the cause is unclear, while ALEX3 and skin prick testing can be booked directly when one of those is already the right test.

Dr Scott Pereira, Consultant Immunologist, offers skin prick testing, the ALEX3 blood test, targeted blood panels, allergen desensitisation when he judges it appropriate, and Omlyclo (omalizumab) when it is indicated. A GP referral is not required.

Consultation and how testing is charged

An allergy consultation with Dr Pereira is £250, in person. From £250 means that consultation only. ALEX3 and any blood panel are charged in addition if you have booked a consultation. Skin prick testing at £450 already includes the consultation.

ALEX3 can be booked as a blood test without a separate consultation when that is clinically appropriate. If you want Dr Pereira to take the history and choose the test, book the consultation. Testing can be done on the same visit as that first appointment when it is suitable.

Or call 0207 499 1991. Consultation and skin prick clinics run on Tuesdays, 14:00 to 17:30.

How to start

Find the trigger, or start treatment

If the cause is unclear, a consultation lets Dr Pereira choose the most useful test, or ALEX3 or skin prick testing can be booked directly when one already fits. Treatment that needs to begin or continue, including Omlyclo, is a different visit.

Find the trigger

This path suits people whose cause is still unclear, or who want a consultant to interpret a wide or targeted test.

  • The £250 consultation is for when you want Dr Pereira to take the history and decide which test to run.
  • Skin prick testing at £450 is for results during the appointment. That fee includes the consultation and up to eight allergens.
  • ALEX3 at £413.75 is for one blood sample to screen sensitivity to 290+ allergens. Results typically take five working days.

Start or continue treatment

This path suits people who already know the cause and need medicine, allergen desensitisation or Omlyclo arranged with Dr Pereira.

  • The £250 consultation is also used to review results and agree the next step.
  • For Omlyclo, call 0207 499 1991. Each visit is £500 and includes the consultation and the in-clinic injection.

A named blood panel is arranged at the consultation.

The clinic difference

Why see Dr Pereira here

Dr Pereira interprets the test and, when Omlyclo is used, gives each injection in clinic and reviews your response. Return visits are arranged when control starts to fade, rather than on a fixed four-week calendar.

Medical Express Clinic has practised at 117a Harley Street, London, W1G 6AT since 1984. The clinic is CQC-registered. Allergy sits among the specialist clinics at this address.

What we test

The tests we offer

Three methods are used here: skin prick testing, ALEX3, and targeted IgE blood panels. Dr Pereira chooses among them from your history, or you book ALEX3 or skin prick directly when that already fits.

A raised result shows sensitisation. It is not, on its own, a diagnosis of clinical allergy. He reads the finding against your symptoms before any avoidance or treatment plan is agreed.

ALEX3 comprehensive allergy test

£413.75

ALEX3 costs £413.75. One blood sample screens sensitivity to 290+ allergens, including foods, pollens, animal dander, moulds, dust mites and insect venoms.

Results typically arrive within five working days and include a written report. ALEX3 is not a same-day result.

Skin prick testing

£450

Skin prick testing costs £450. That fee includes the consultation with Dr Pereira and up to eight allergens. Further allergens are £10 each, up to five more. If you suspect a particular substance, you may bring a sample.

Small drops of allergen extract are placed on the forearm and the skin is lightly pricked. A raised wheal, when it appears, is usually visible within about 15 to 20 minutes. Results are discussed in clinic during the same appointment.

Targeted blood panels

These panels look at a defined group of allergens when the history already points in one direction. Prices below are the current clinic list. Results typically take two to five working days, depending on the panel.

If you are unsure which panel to use, the consultation is the place to decide. Any of these tests can be taken at that visit when it is appropriate.

Food allergy

Food reactions are investigated with skin prick testing, ALEX3 or a food-focused blood panel, depending on the history. A food panel is an IgE sensitivity test. It does not diagnose lactose intolerance or other non-immune food reactions.

Testing for children

Children can be seen in this clinic. Dr Pereira decides whether skin prick testing, ALEX3 or the children's blood panel (£376.25) is the better method for that child. A parent or legal guardian attends with them.

Your visit

What to bring and how the appointment works

Allergy consultations and skin prick testing run on Tuesdays from 14:00, with the last bookable window ending at 17:30. Visits usually last 30 to 60 minutes.

What to bring

  • A list of current medicines
  • Any previous allergy results you already have
  • Photographs of a rash or swelling if that is part of the story
  • A suspected food or substance sample for skin prick testing, if relevant

Before skin prick testing

Stop all antihistamines three days (72 hours) before the appointment. Continue all other prescribed medicines as usual, including asthma inhalers and nasal sprays. ALEX3 and blood panels do not require stopping antihistamines. If you cannot stop antihistamines, a blood test may be the preferred option.

If you are unsure whether a blood test or skin prick testing is the better first step, the consultation is the place to decide with Dr Pereira in the room.

Results and what follows

After the results

Skin prick results are ready in clinic, usually within about 15 to 20 minutes. ALEX3 typically takes five working days. Other blood panels typically take two to five working days.

Dr Pereira interprets the result alongside your symptoms and medical history. The next step may be avoiding a confirmed trigger, adjusting medicine, or allergen desensitisation (immunotherapy) when he judges that appropriate. Those plans are agreed with him at a consultation.

Omlyclo (omalizumab) at Medical Express Clinic

Omlyclo is omalizumab, often known as Xolair. At Medical Express Clinic it is started and continued by Dr Scott Pereira only, in clinic. Every dose is given in clinic by Dr Pereira.

It is used here as add-on therapy when licensed criteria are met:

  • Severe persistent allergic asthma: add-on therapy to improve asthma control in patients with severe persistent allergic asthma.
  • Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps: add-on with intranasal corticosteroids in adults aged 18 and above with severe disease when intranasal corticosteroids do not provide adequate control.
  • Chronic spontaneous urticaria: add-on therapy in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and above with inadequate response to H1 antihistamine treatment.

Each visit is £500. That fee bundles the consultation and the in-clinic injection. The two are not sold separately.

In Dr Pereira's practice at Medical Express Clinic, most patients on Omlyclo stay controlled for more than a month after each in-clinic dose, although this is observed clinic experience rather than a trial result and individual response varies.

Call 0207 499 1991 to arrange a visit.

When to book something else

Allergy, intolerance and urgent reactions

This service is for suspected IgE-mediated allergy, for interpretation of a test, and for consultant-led treatment including Omlyclo where indicated.

Allergy testing looks for an immune response. Food intolerances such as lactose intolerance work by different mechanisms and need different investigations. If you are unsure which you have, the consultation is the place to sort that out. The gluten sensitivity panel is a sensitivity profile, not an intolerance diagnosis.

If a reaction involves difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, or collapse, call 999 or go to A&E. Medical Express Clinic is not an emergency service.

Mild, well-controlled seasonal symptoms that already settle with pharmacy treatment may not need a consultant visit. A first assessment of those symptoms can start with GP services.

FAQs

Common questions

Q.Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is not required. The consultation, ALEX3 or skin prick testing can be booked directly.

Q.Can I book a test without a consultation?

ALEX3 can be booked as a blood test without a separate consultation when that is clinically appropriate. Skin prick testing already includes the consultation in the £450 fee. Targeted blood panels are arranged at a consultation.

Q.Does a positive test mean I have an allergy?

A raised result shows sensitisation. It is not, on its own, a diagnosis of clinical allergy. Dr Pereira interprets the finding against your history before any plan is agreed.

Q.How soon will I get results?

Skin prick results are ready during the appointment, usually within about 15 to 20 minutes. ALEX3 typically takes five working days. Other blood panels typically take two to five working days.

Q.Do I need to stop antihistamines before skin prick testing?

Stop all antihistamines three days (72 hours) before skin prick testing. Continue other prescribed medicines as usual, including asthma inhalers and nasal sprays. ALEX3 and blood panels do not require stopping antihistamines. If you cannot stop antihistamines, say so when you book.

Q.How do I start or continue Omlyclo?

Call 0207 499 1991. Omlyclo (omalizumab, often known as Xolair) is given in clinic by Dr Pereira only. Each visit is £500 and includes the consultation and the injection. It is used when licensed criteria for severe persistent allergic asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, or chronic spontaneous urticaria are met.

Q.I already have allergy results. Can Dr Pereira review them?

Bring the reports to a £250 consultation. He will decide whether further testing or treatment is needed.

Q.Is allergy testing suitable for children?

Children can be tested here. Dr Pereira chooses the method. The children's blood panel is £376.25. A parent or legal guardian attends with the child.

Q.Is allergy testing covered by insurance?

Cover depends on your policy, so check with your insurer before you book; the clinic cannot confirm that a policy will pay.

Q.When are allergy consultations and skin prick tests available?

Those clinics run on Tuesdays from 14:00, with the last bookable window ending at 17:30. ALEX3 is booked as a blood test separately. For Omlyclo, call 0207 499 1991.
