What can a consultant gynaecologist help you decide?

If you want a specialist view on a pelvic, menstrual or fertility concern, you can book our Consultant Gynaecologist, Mr Hikmat Naoum, directly for a consultation. We listen first, examine you only when it would help, and can perform an ultrasound during the same visit if it would help establish a diagnosis. On-site testing and certain procedures are also available.

You leave with an explanation and a plan, which may include treatment here, a private smear, or referral to fertility, breast, menopause or another specialty. For coil fitting, removal or replacement, book through contraceptive services.

Facts about this consultation

A first consultant gynaecology visit with Mr Naoum is £250. A follow-up for existing patients is £200. If he performs ultrasound during the visit, the all-in fee is £450: the £250 consultation plus a £200 ultrasound fee. The scan is not booked as a separate online service. He discusses what he can see in the room, so there is no second results appointment for that scan.

A referral is not required, and appointments are by arrangement at 117a Harley Street. The £250 consultation is the right booking when you want a consultant to assess a pelvic, menstrual, fertility or early-pregnancy concern and agree what should happen next.

What we assess

Conditions and concerns this clinic commonly sees

These are the problems most often brought here.

The list is not a diagnosis.

Mr Naoum decides what to examine, and whether ultrasound is useful, once he has heard the history.

Facts about the concerns we assess

Pelvic pain and discomfort. Acute or longer-standing pelvic pain, including assessment for endometriosis, ovarian cysts and adhesions. The aim is a working explanation and a next investigation or treatment, rather than a scan request with no plan.

Abnormal bleeding. Heavy periods, irregular bleeding, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after the menopause. Ultrasound can often be done in the same visit when it would change the plan.

Fertility consultations. An initial fertility assessment for one person or a couple. Mr Naoum reviews difficulties conceiving, orders or interprets investigations, and refers on to specialist fertility services when that is the right next step. A dedicated fertility assessment is £600 if that is the visit you want to book.

Early pregnancy. Clinic consultations for pregnancy-related concerns when it is safe to wait for an arranged appointment. This is not an emergency early-pregnancy unit. If you have severe pain or heavy bleeding in pregnancy, go to A&E or call 999.

Urgent symptoms that are not an emergency. Heavy bleeding or pelvic pain that worries you, but is not an A&E emergency, can be assessed in clinic by appointment.

Genital warts. Diagnosis and removal of HPV-related genital warts using hyfrecator treatment. The first session is £450. The service is available for women and men. Standalone warts care is also described on the genital warts removal page.

Your visit

What happens at your appointment

The visit starts as a conversation.

Arriving with a diagnosis, or knowing whether a scan will be needed, is not expected.

Facts about the visit

A member of the nursing team is present as a chaperone for examinations and procedures.Mr Naoum explains each step of an intimate examination as he goes, and you may ask him to pause.

If ultrasound is indicated, he performs it on site and talks through what he can see then and there, as part of the same consultation, so there is no later visit just to hear the scan findings.

When to book something else

When consultant gynaecology is not the first step

Coil fitting, removal or replacement, or a comparison of copper and hormonal devices, is booked through contraceptive services.

Clinics for coils run on Thursdays and Fridays by appointment.

Perimenopause or HRT questions start with the menopause clinic. Dr Penelope Sheehan, a GP with a menopause interest, consults on Mondays and Wednesdays. GP menopause consultation is £150. HRT prescribing and monitoring are booked through the HRT clinic.

Cervical screening alone is a private smear test. A planned health check that can include a gynaecology component at Elite or Ultimate level is better compared on the Well Woman MOT page than as a symptom-led consultation.

Severe or life-threatening symptoms need 999 or A&E. Urgent symptoms that are not life-threatening should use NHS 111. A booked clinic visit is not the right first step for an emergency.
