4 Health Tests that are Necessary for a Better Life

With age, it is important to take care of health condition. By performing routine health checkups that requires only a few minutes, you can detect the problems at an early stage which makes them easier to be treated. This blog discusses about some health tests that should be performed on time to prevent unnecessary problems.

NHS health check

The NHS Health Check is a free health check-up that detects if you are at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as diabetes, kidney, heart disease and stroke.

What is involved in the process?

An NHS health check requires nearly 20 to 30 minutes where the health care professional will ask certain questions about your family background, lifestyle measure your weight, height, check your blood pressure and perform a blood test by using a small finger prick test.

Why is the test necessary?

Your health professional will provide an idea of your changes getting kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes and stroke based on the results of the tests conducted.

Bowel cancer screening

Bowel cancer screening does not identify cancer, however it helps detect probable problems before a person has symptoms.

What is involved in the procedure?

The testing kit, known as Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBt), is sent through the post and requires collecting stool samples for several days which is then sent to the laboratory for further analysis. The sreening is done in every 2 years for all men and women who are in the age group of 60 to 74 years.

Why is the test needed?

Bowel cancer is the fourth common cancer in the UK. The sooner it is detected, the easier it will be to treat it.

What happens next?

The test requires traces of blood and if there is any sign of this, you will have to perform the test again. This does not mean you have bowel cancer, but you may need a bowel examination known as colonoscopy to stop this possibility. A small percentage of people may have abnormal results and will need to do follow-up tests.

Cervical screening

Cervical screening helps to prevent cancer by detecting certain abnormalities that could be the reason for cancer in a woman’s cervix, if not treated on time.

What is involved in the method?

The doctor inserts an instrument known as a speculum for opening the vagina and uses a small soft brush for sweeping around the cervix. Though it is bit uncomfortable for most women, it is not painful.

Why is the test important?

Nearly 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are being diagnosed every year in the UK. Since the screening programme had been introduced in the 1980s, the number of cervical cancer cases has now reduced by 7% each year.

How often do you need to get checked?

All women who are in the age group of 25-64 are eligible for a free cervical screening test every 3-5 years. Women above 65 are not usually invited for screening unless they have not been screened since 50 or had an abnormal result in any of their three recent tests.

Cholesterol tests

Cholesterol is a kind of fat carried around the body in the blood. High levels of cholesterol might build up in the arteries and increase the risk of stroke or heart attack.

What is involved in this procedure?

You can have the cholesterol level measured with a blood test at the best private gp.

Why is the test required?

High cholesterol does not show any symptoms so you might have to wait for without knowing if you are suffering from any disease. The only option to find out is by performing the test.

What is the next thing to do after the test?

If you have high cholesterol level, it can be reduced by changing the diet chart, maintaining a healthy body weight and doing regular exercises. If you have heart disease or are at the risk of developing it, then visit Private GP London Clinic to manage the situation in a better way.
